He was sentenced to five years in prison, and released on probation in August 2002. He returned to Maine and his wife, Elene. At some point in the next year or so, according to Elene’s account, Guarente decided to put together a lunch in nearby Portland with his old friend Bobby Gentile and Gentile’s wife.
